Trust In Car Check · Trust In Motors
Privacy Policy
This policy explains how personal information is used on the Trust In Car Check website and its Trust In Motors marketplace, and your rights under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
Who we are
Trust In Car Check is our vehicle-check service. Trust In Motors is our free UK used-car marketplace for private and trade sellers. The operator of these services is responsible for the marketplace personal information described in this policy.
For privacy questions or requests, contact hello@trustincarcheck.co.uk.
What we collect
- Vehicle checks: the registration you enter is passed to the vehicle-check application when you start a check. This marketplace policy does not describe any additional information collected during a separate report purchase or payment.
- Seller accounts: your email address, account identifier and password-based sign-in information, including information used for account confirmation and password recovery.
- Seller adverts: seller type, vehicle details, optional registration, asking price, description, photos, postcode and advert status, plus your contact name, email and telephone number.
- Buyer enquiries: your name, email address and message when you contact a seller.
- Technical information: basic information needed to keep you signed in and the site working.
What is public
Only active, published adverts are available publicly. They show the advert title, seller type, vehicle details, price, description, photos and the first part of the postcode. Draft and removed adverts are not public.
Your full postcode, registration number, seller account identifier and separately stored contact name, email and telephone number are excluded from public advert data. Buyer enquiries are not public.
Anything you put in an advert description or photo becomes public when the advert is published. Do not include contact details, full addresses or other private information there; check photos for visible number plates, documents and people before uploading them.
How and why we use it
- To provide your account and publish and manage your adverts (performing our agreement with you).
- To store buyer enquiries and make them available to the relevant seller (our legitimate interest in connecting buyers and sellers, following the buyer’s request).
- To look up available vehicle details through the DVSA when a signed-in seller requests a registration lookup (performing the marketplace service requested).
- To prevent spam, fraud and misuse and to remove unsuitable adverts (legitimate interests).
- To meet legal obligations.
Our legitimate interests are operating the marketplace, enabling genuine enquiries and protecting users from misuse. Where we rely on legitimate interests, we must consider your rights and whether our use is necessary and proportionate.
Account sign-in information is needed to use seller account features. The advert form identifies the details needed to submit an advert; registration lookup is optional and missing vehicle details can be entered manually. Buyer name, email and message are needed to send an enquiry.
Who we share it with
- The relevant seller can read a buyer’s name, email and message in My Adverts. Authorised marketplace administrators can also access enquiries. Replies are sent through the seller’s own email service, not a marketplace chat system, and may reveal the seller’s email address to the buyer.
- Service providers involved in running the website, accounts, advert storage and photos.
- The DVSA, which receives the registration number entered for a vehicle lookup.
- Authorities where the law requires it.
How long we keep it
Saved drafts remain available to their seller, active adverts remain public until removed, and enquiries are stored for sellers to read and respond to. Removing an active advert hides it from public pages; it does not by itself delete the stored advert or all associated information.
You can delete a draft or remove an active advert in My Adverts. For account closure or a request to erase personal information, email us. Deletion rights may be subject to legal obligations or information needed to handle a dispute.
We keep personal information only for as long as we need it for the purposes described above, or to meet legal obligations.
Your rights
Depending on the circumstances, you can ask to access or correct your personal information, have it erased, restrict its use, or receive it in a portable format. You can object to uses based on legitimate interests. If a use relies on consent, you can withdraw that consent without affecting earlier lawful use.
To exercise your rights, email hello@trustincarcheck.co.uk. We may need information to verify your identity. Requests are normally answered within one month; UK data protection law allows extensions in some circumstances.
If you are unhappy with how we handle your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
Security
Account access controls restrict sellers to their own adverts. Public advert data excludes private seller fields, and photo files use private storage with time-limited viewing links for published adverts. These controls do not guarantee that an online service is completely secure.
Cookies
Seller sign-in uses browser storage to maintain your session. This is needed for account features. Any non-essential cookies or tracking require separate information and, where required by UK law, your consent; this policy does not grant that consent.
Changes
We will update this page when our use of personal information changes.
